Flashing Telephone Ringer Lets You Silently Know When Someone is Calling
Written by Vlad on August 19, 2010 – 8:05 pm -A flashing telephone ringer, also called a telephone strobe light, phone strobe flasher or silent telephone ringer, is a small device that you connect to your landline telephone socket. When someone rings you, the strobe light on the box flashes. You mount it on a wall or a shelf where it can be easily seen.

Rotating Mop Helps People Who Hate Getting Their Hands Dirty
Written by Vlad on August 16, 2010 – 10:30 pm -This rotating mop has a circular head and comes with a special bucket that contains a pedal-powered rotating basket. When you need to dry the mop, you stick the bottom into the basket and press on the pedal with your foot. As the basket spins, centrifugal force wrings the excess moisture out of the mop, which then flows back into the bucket.
I bought this on Catchoftheday for about $35, but it is also sold on eBay and a number of other daily deal sites. It goes by various names including Amazing 360° Roto Mop, Spinning Mop, Spin Mop and Magic Mop.

ASIX AX88178 USB 2.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Written by Vlad on August 13, 2010 – 9:59 pm -The easiest way to add high speed Gigabit Ethernet networking to a Laptop, Netbook, Media Centre PC or Desktop PC is with a USB Gigabit Ethernet adapter.
All USB Gigabit Ethernet adapters that I have seen are based on the ASIX AX88178 chipset. Detailed chipset information and drivers are available from ASIX’s website.
I paid about $60 for two generic-branded adapters on eBay that I imported from China. I have these adapters installed on two Windows 7 x64 machines that have been running 24hrs/day for 3 months and have never missed a beat. They are also supported under Linux.

Universal RF Modulator Lets You Connect a Digital STB to a TV Without Composite Video Inputs
Written by Vlad on August 12, 2010 – 6:52 pm -Many of us have old Analogue TV’s that are in tip-top shape and have a superb picture. They kept us entertained when we grew up and are now like a member of the family, so we can’t imagine parting with them.
Some of our beloved TVs can receive Digital TV with the aid of a Set Top Box (STB). You simply connect the TV antenna to the back of the STB, and then you connect the set top box to your TV using the composite video and audio inputs.
Unfortunately, some of our old TVs don’t have composite video inputs, which would usually prevent us from connecting a Digital Set Top box (STB) or DVD player. An RF modulator lets you take the composite video and audio output from your STB and convert it into a broadcast signal that can be tuned in on your analogue TV like a normal TV station.

HDMI over Cat 5 Extender
Written by Vlad on August 12, 2010 – 12:40 pm -HDMI over Cat 5 extenders lets you extend the distance between any HDMI-equipped DVD player, Media Centre PC or Games Console and your TV screen using cheap Cat5 or Cat6 network cable. The most common use for HDMI extenders is when you have a large Plasma or LCD TV that is located far away from your Stereo or Hi-Fi cabinet.
The extender consists of two components – a transmitter, which connects to the HDMI output device, and a receiver, which connects to the HDMI input of your LCD or Plasma TV.
The transmitter and receiver are then connected over a longer distance by two lengths of Cat-5 cable. One Cat5 cable carries the HDMI DDC (control) signals and the other Cat-5 cable carries the HDMI Video and Audio signals.

Portable UV Sterilizer Wand Disinfects Computer Keyboards and Phone Keypads
Written by Vlad on August 11, 2010 – 12:41 pm -The Portable UV Sterilizer makes it easy to kill germs on surfaces that cannot easily be washed, such as computer keyboards and telephone keypads. It works by generating UV-C light with a peak wavelength of 253.7nm, which damages the DNA and RNA in pathogens such as viruses and bacteria, making them inactive and preventing them from growing or reproducing.
I bought this on eBay for just under $20 including shipping. It takes four AAA batteries. The specifications state that it generates 2W of light output and weights 65g. The expected lifetime of the UV tube is 10,000 hours.
