Silent Flashing Telephone Ringer

A flashing telephone ringer, also called a telephone strobe light, phone strobe flasher or silent telephone ringer, is a small device that you connect to your landline telephone socket. When someone rings you, the strobe light on the box flashes. You mount it on a wall or a shelf where it can be easily seen.

Why I Bought the Flashing Telephone Ringer

I bought this as a gift for my brother who lives nearby. He has always been a light sleeper and he often complained about being woken up by telephone calls from people who called the wrong number or by telemarketers, and then have trouble getting back to sleep.

As a result, in the evening he would unplug his home phone from the wall, or set the ringing volume to silent, but then would forget to turn it back on in the morning, so he would miss calls from me.

After going some google searches, I found the above solution.

Other Uses for the Flashing Telephone Ringer

if you have young children who go to bed early, you can still receive calls late at night after their bedtime
If you live with someone who works night shifts and sleeps in the day, you can incoming phone calls from disturbing them
If you are hearing impaired, this provides a clearly visible visual indicator

Differences Between Flashing Telephone Ringing Devices On the Market

The telephone ringer that I have, like the one pictured above, has two modular RJ-12 sockets. One connects to your telephone line socket and the other one can optionally connect to your telephone handset, so you won’t need to get a double-adapter. This device also draws its power from the telephone line.

A second type of flashing telephone ringing device has a brighter strobe light, and this type use a separate mains power adapter to power them.

A third type of silent telephone ringer is designed to control an existing light or lamp in your home, e.g. a desk lamp or ceiling lamp.
